When one door closes...

"We’re excited to see how much more energy efficient we are once winter comes.” Ronald Berg, Senior Process Engineer

LILLESTRØM, (September 4, 2019) - allnex, a leading supplier of specialty chemicals, offering a broad range of coating resins, additives and crosslinkers for use on wood, metal, plastic and other surfaces, has found a new and unique way to improve on its Energy Efficiency in Lillestrøm, Norway.

“When one door closes, another one opens” is the saying. So what – you may ask – does that have to do with Energy Efficiency at allnex?

As one can imagine, our Lillestrøm, Norway plant is no stranger to cold and harsh winters. In fact, the daily average high temp during the cold season is below 36°F, or 2°C, and drops down to -15/-20°C (5° to -4°F) during the winter months. With warehouse doors being open and shut several times a day for deliveries, shipments and the like, this can result in a significant loss of heat from the plant causing the need for more energy usage to keep the site warm.

That’s where a literal ‘door closing’ led to one of the first of its kind to be set up in Norway. Assa Abloy, a global entrance system vendor, worked with allnex to install new sets of doors that open/close significantly faster than the existing standard doors, thereby lessening the amount of energy loss at the site. In fact, Assa Abloy created a great video showcasing it – we invite you to check it out.

“This has been a great addition to the site,” says Ronald Berg, Senior Process Engineer, allnex. “To have new sets of doors that are that much faster than our existing doors has really made a difference already – and we’re excited to see how much more energy efficient we are once winter comes.”

Operators at the site are also very pleased with the new doors, as having a shorter time to wait as the doors open/close make them more efficient as well.
