Wallingford, Conn., November 17th, 2017 allnex-Wallingford recently hosted an informative and engaging Project Learning Tree workshop for Wallingford Public School science teachers. The event was presented by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s (DEEP) Kellogg Environmental Center. Kristen Bellantuono, No Child Left Inside® Coordinator, served as lead presenter.
In place for over four decades, the Project Learning Tree program was developed for teachers and other educators to enrich their existing environmental science programs for students in preschool through high school. Getting children to learn how to think about the environment, instead of simply telling them what to think, is a primary objective of the program.
“Learning how to provide engaging environmental programs is critical for all students, particularly those interested in pursuing a career in STEM,” Kate O’Donnell, Science Curriculum Resource Teacher for Wallingford Schools, said. “We are grateful to allnex and DEEP for this unique hands-on opportunity for our teachers, a opportunity sure to benefit many of our students district-wide.”
Attendees began their day with a safety talk and guided tour of the allnex-Wallingford site. Sue Quincy, Director of the Kellogg Environmental Center at CT DEEP, kicked off the formal workshop by providing an overview and history of the Project Learning Tree program. The teachers also participated in several hands-on activities that are sure to engage their students. The day closed with an informative presentation by Jill Humphreys, a CT DEEP seasonal forester.
“The program was a complete success,” O’Donnell said. “I am looking forward to working more with allnex and DEEP to support teachers in the delivery of engaging environmental science programs in Wallingford public schools.”
