Phenolic Crosslinkers

Phenolic-based crosslinking resins used for packaging, industrial and Automotive metal coatings plus electronics, tires, textiles and other specialty end uses.

Our phenolics resins are used in a wide variety of end use applications including for phenolic packaging coatings and the rubber industry.

Our PHENODUR® product line includes a group of phenolic resins that can be used to enable BPA- and BADGE-Non intended phenolic coatings through use of polyester resins instead of epoxides. Use of phenolic resins for metal packaging applications also helps provide the optimum balance of flexibility, durability, chemical resistance and film toughness.

Our ALNOVOL® novolac resins are used in the rubber industry for reinforcement and adhesion support.

More on Phenolic resins

What is phenolic resin used for? Exemplary fields of application:

Phenolic resins / phenol formaldehyde resins are used in a wide variety of industrial products that need a durable, smooth and spotless coating – thus phenolic resins are perfect for molded objects like billiard balls and circuit boards or as phenolic coatings on cars and cans.  Other uses include phenolic foam for insulation and various applications in the rubber industry including tires. Learn more about the uses for phenolic resins:

Phenol formaldehyde resin in phenolic coating

Phenolic coating offers consistent, high-grade protection against corrosion, scratches and cracks. Baked phenolic coatings can be used in a wide range of pH environments, even in extremely acidic environments as it has excellent chemical resistance to acids even at high temperatures up to 120°F/48°C. Therefore, phenolic coatings are the optimal coating choice for a variety of industrial applications such as exhaust hoods, pumps, pipes, and tank linings.
The PHENODUR® product line can also be used as a phenolic coating for metal packaging where a perfect equilibrium between durability, chemical resistance, flexibility and film toughness is needed such as in beverage cans. Our PHENODUR® products simplify the phenolic coating process and lower its costs with numerous phenolic crosslinkers for almost every situation. Phenolic resins in rubber products such as tires

Phenol formaldehyde resins are an impeccable alternative for resorcinol. Resorcinol which can cause erythema’s and skin irritations, is water-soluble and therefore harmful to the environment and the human organism. Phenolic resins are a safer alternative when used as crosslinkers in rubber products. Our ALNOVOL® novolac resins provide a great alternative for resorcinol in the rubber products such as for tires. Phenolic resins help reinforce rubber structures and improve adhesion, plus they can be used for a wide variety of rubbers such as natural, nitrile, styrene-butadiene and EDPM rubber. Is phenolic resin hazardous?

Pure phenol and its vapors are indeed hazardous by inhalation or contact as they can severely irritate skin and eyes since it contains formaldehyde; therefore raw phenolic resin should also be treated with appropriate protection in production. However, phenolic resins in finished products are safe and can be used without any troubles. Do you need more information on phenolic resin‘s health hazards? Get in contact with our experts!

What is the difference between epoxy resin and phenolic resin?

Epoxy resin and phenolic resin are extremely similar. However, phenol formaldehyde resins are easier to work with and offer increased customization. The most noteworthy difference between epoxy and phenolic resin lies within their heat handling capacity as phenolic coatings can withstand much higher constant heat exposure.

What are the properties of phenol formaldehyde resin?

Phenol formaldehyde resins feature great electrical and mechanical insulation, they are durable and have a good flame and heat resistance, plus, they do not produce a lot of smoke when burned. Therefore, phenolic resins are efficiently used as coatings and adhesives in batteries and copper clad laminates (CCL’s) in consumer electronics.
