Jan 22, 2025 Corporate Innovation
  • allnex & ISCC collaboration confirms allnex’s leadership in sustainable practices

  • allnex and ISCC jointly create new chemical categories under the ISCC PLUS certification standard

Frankfurt, January 22, 2025 - allnex, the global leader in sustainable and innovative resins for industrial coatings and additives, today shares the success story of its collaboration with the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC). This partnership has significantly advanced allnex's sustainability strategy, supporting efforts to minimize its environmental impact and achieve groundbreaking certifications across multiple manufacturing sites globally.

What is ISCC?

International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a globally applicable and leading certification system designed to enhance traceable, sustainable, deforestation-free, and climate-friendly supply chains. ISCC certifications are widely recognized and cover sustainable agricultural biomass, biogenic wastes and residues, non-biological renewable materials and recycled carbon-based materials. With over 11,000 certificates in 130+ countries, ISCC aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and bring more traceability into global markets and supply chains.

allnex and ISCC PLUS

The ISCC PLUS standard is a third-party certification for tracking certified materials via the mass balance approach, enabling enhance  supply chain traceability and support efforts to lower the environmental impact of its products.

The certification integrates economic, and environmental criteria into allnex’s global management systems, building on its long-standing ISO-9001 certification. Implemented into the existing ERP system, this process enables easy expansion to other sites and products.

Recently, with input from allnex's technology experts, the ISCC PLUS team introduced a new chemical category to the ISCC PLUS material list. This achievement underscores the close collaboration between our teams and highlights allnex's pioneering role in sustainable innovation.

What is Mass Balance?

The mass balance approach is a chain of custody method used to trace the flow of alternative feedstocks through complex value chains. During the production process, the certified feedstocks are mixed with conventional materials and the products become physically indistinguishable from those made solely from conventional feedstocks.

By using the mass balance system, companies can document and track the exact amount of alternative feedstocks used, ensuring that the quantity of alternative feedstocks allocated to the product matches the quantity sourced at the start of the production. One of the major advantages of the mass balance approach is its flexibility: companies can gradually increase the share of alternative feedstocks in the production process without altering the existing infrastructure.

allnex’s ISCC PLUS Journey

Since its first combined certification of the Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands) and Werndorf (Austria) sites in November 2022, allnex has expanded ISCC PLUS certification to nine global sites. Beyond certification, allnex actively collaborates with ISCC to improve the Material List, creating new chemical categories for some of the speciality products’ like polyester acrylates and amino resins.

In July-September 2023, allnex worked with ISCC to introduce new categories for different types of acrylates, making its Drogenbos (Belgium) site the first ISCC certified producer in this category. Similarly, in 2024, allnex Lillestrom (Norway) became the first site certified to produce amino resins, furthering allnex’s leadership in sustainable innovation.

“Our ISCC PLUS certified sites and technologies showcase our commitment to sustainability, providing traceability throughout our supply chain. We are proud to support our customers with high-performing products that help them deliver on their environmental responsibilities.", says Benoit De Becker, Senior Vice President Corporate Development & Innovation.

"allnex’s efforts demonstrate the impact of collaboration in driving industry-wide change. As an ISCC systems user, allnex has contributed to the expansion range of ISCC PLUS certified materials, promoting greater transparency and environmental responsibility in the chemical sector", comments Haridharan Krishnan, ISCC PLUS System Manager.
