Reducing the allnex-Wallingford Carbon Footprint by 900 Tons

FRANKFURT, (August 2, 2018) - allnex, the leading supplier of specialty chemicals, offering a broad range of coating resins, additives and crosslinkers for use on wood, metal, plastic and other surfaces, is thrilled to announce that over the last two years, allnex-Wallingford has reduced its carbon footprint by almost 900 tons. This is the equivalent to planting nearly 4,400 tropical trees!

Did you know that the United States is the second-largest single consumer of energy in the world? allnex-Wallingford happens to be one of the top consumers of natural gas in the state, as well as the number one user of electricity in the town of Wallingford. These rankings are largely due to the size of the operation, but there are opportunities for improvement at every level to ensure that allnex is being a good steward of energy resources.

At allnex, we are committed to continuous improvement in the reduction of energy usage at all our plants. Whether these savings originate from changes in the procurement and use of raw materials, product development processes, or the site’s energy consumption, each allnex team member is dedicated to our company-wide energy reduction goals.

At the Wallingford site in particular, the goal to reduce annual energy consumption by two percent (2%) is achievable due to the efforts of an internal Energy Team. Led by a process engineer, the team meets monthly to discuss and evaluate innovative ideas that have been submitted by their colleagues. The team is then charged to implement these ideas in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

Since early 2017, the Energy Team at Wallingford has reduced the plant’s natural gas consumption by 2.5% due to investments in upgraded steam trap technology, improved heat recovery systems, and shutting off heat in underused buildings. Additionally, after installing several high efficiency motors, LED lighting, lighting motion sensors, and shutting off lights in buildings with low occupancy, we have reduced electricity consumption by approximately 4%.

The allnex-Wallingford team clearly recognizes that their efforts help to reduce greenhouse gases and lessens the impact to the environment. While saving energy is a common business goal for many organizations, at allnex, we believe it’s simply the right thing to do.
